Back-lit: The subject is illuminated from behind and will be underexposed unless you use fill flash or exposure compensation
Barnstormer: In the early years of aviation pilots gave people rides in an aircraft and performed aerobatics for a fee. They were known as barnstormers.
Barometer: An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure, and therefore for forecasting the weather.
Barometric pressure: The actual pressure value indicated by a pressure sensor.
Barrel distortion: One of the common lens aberrations, where straight lines at the edge of the field are caused to bend into the shape of a barrel.
Base leg: A flight path at right angles to the landing runway off its approach end that extends from the downwind leg to the intersection of the extended runway centerline.
Bayer pattern: A pattern of red, green, and blue filters on the image sensor's photosites. There are twice as many green filters as the other colors because the human eye is more sensitive to green and therefore green color accuracy is more important.
Beta: Stands for the letter B in the phonetic alphabet
Binocular vision: Visual ability to determine three dimensions. Stereoscopic photography depends on the use of binocular vision.
Biplane: An airplane having two wings on each side of the fuselage, one usually slightly forward and above the other.
Bit-mapped: Images formed from pixels with each pixel a shade of gray or color. Using 24-bit color, each pixel can be set to any one of 16 million colors.
Bitmap: An array of binary data representing a pixel by pixel (bit-mapped) image or display.
Blur: Unsharp image areas, created or caused by subject or camera movement, or by selective or inaccurate focusing.
Border: Edge of a photographic print, either left white, or printed black.
Bravo: Stands for the letter B in the phonetic alphabet.
Buffer: Memory in the camera that stores digital photos before they are written to the memory card.
Byte: A group of 8 bits, the basic unit of information for the computer.
