Wake turbulence: Wingtip vortices generated behind a wing producing lift. Behind a large heavy aircraft they can be powerful enough to roll or even break up a smaller aircraft.
Warm colors: Are any colors which, by association, suggest warmth, such as red, orange and yellow.
Warm Front: A narrow transitions zone separating advancing warmer air from retreating cooler air. The air behind a warm front is warmer and typically more humid than the air it is replacing.
Water Vapor: Water particles in a gaseous state.
Wavelength: Describes the distance from wave-crest to wave-crest between two corresponding waves of light in the electro-magnetic spectrum. Wavelengths are measured in nanometers (nm) and Angstrom units (A).
Weather: State of the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold, wetness or dryness, calm or storm, clearness or cloudiness. Also, weather is the meteorological day-to-day variations of the atmosphere and their effects on life on Earth. It includes temperature, pres
Weather synopsis.: A description of weather patterns affecting a large area.
Whisky: Stands for the letter w in the phonetic alphabet. (and a fine drop in a bottle)
White balance: A function on the camera to compensate for different colors of light being emitted by different light sources.
Wide-angle lens: A camera lens with a focal length less than the diagonal of the film format it's being used for.
Wind: Air in motion relative to the surface of the earth.
Wind direction: The direction from which the wind is blowing
Wind Shear: Variation in wind speed and/or direction over a short distance. Shear usually refers to vertical wind shear, i.e., the change in wind with height, but the term also is used in Doppler radar to describe changes in radial velocity over short distances. Can
Wind Speed: The rate at which air is moving horizontally past a given point. It may be a 2-minute average speed or as a gust.
Windward: Upwind, or the direction from which the wind is blowing; the opposite of leeward.
Wing: A part of an airplane that is attached to the fuselage. Wings are shaped like airfoils and are used to provide lift for the airplane. There are four basic types of wings: straight, sweep, delta and variable sweep.
Wingspan: The distance from wingtip to wingtip on a fixed wing aircraft.
Wright Brothers: On 17 December 1903 Orville Wright made the first controlled powered flight. He flew a distance of 120 feet, lasting 12 seconds. On the second flight his brother Wilbur Wright flew a distance of 850 feet, lasting 69 seconds.
