OCEAN CARE DAY AND ‘LIFE SAVING ENERGY’
As part of the Manly/Northern Beaches community we at the Airview Group are always keen to support local works of charity and more recently, awareness of climate change and clean energy. So on December the 2nd this year we brought our chopper into position over Manly Beach and photographed the event outlined in press release below below. Ron Kreuger, the organiser of the day and tireless campaigner for climate change awareness passed on this press release and here it is posted below along with some shots of the day from the air.

Australia’s largest human sign will be formed at North Steyne beach at 9.30am on
2 December at 2007 as part of Ocean Care Day and to celebrate the national launch of ‘LIFE SAVING ENERGY’, an initiative of Clean Energy For Eternity (CEFE).

A runner up for the inaugural Eureka Award for Innovative Solution to Climate Change 2007, CEFE is gaining traction throughout NSW as a grass roots climate change action group with thousands of members throughout five shires in South East NSW.

More recently, the climate change group established its first metropolitan chapters in Manly and Mosman.

The organisation has an unusual way of getting its message out to the world through the use of human signs or sculptures.  A similar exercise on Tathra beach in the South Coast attracted over 3,000 people to form the words ‘Clean Energy For Eternity’.  Since Tathra, signs have appeared on beaches and school ovals throughout the Monaro, Snowy River, Eurobodalla, and Shoalhaven shires.

More recently the organisation received an anonymous donation of $30,000 to enable Clean Energy for Eternity to become the principal sponsor of the George Bass Marathon, a high profile NSW surfing event.

According to CEFE founder Dr Matthew Nott, thousands of people are expected to descend on North Steyne beach to share their concerns about climate change as they form the words, LIFE SAVING ENERGY.

“Over the past few months the Manly Chapter of CEFE, with the support of North Steyne surf club and the Manly Council, have received a commitment from churches, businesses, sports clubs, social groups, schools and surf clubs to form the human sign.

"The human sign is a way of getting our message out to the rest of Australia that everyone can make a difference to saving our planet,” said Dr Nott, a recipient of the NSW Government’s 2006 Green Energy Champion Award.

“Underlying our novel approach to engaging the community in climate change is a far more serious message, said Dr Nott.

“We cannot wait for governments to procrastinate on greenhouse gas emission targets.  Australia’s emissions have increased 25% in the past ten years. While we are a politically non-aligned group, we need to intensify pressure on government to reverse the situation on greenhouse gas emissions.  So far neither party has given us any positive action on climate change.

“We’ve gone ahead and set a realistic target that can be achieved by all of the community. 50/50 by 2020 is simply a 50% reduction in the consumption of energy and 50% of energy production from clean renewable sources by the year 2020.

“The human sign at North Steyne beach is a catalyst to spread the CEFE initiative with the support of local surf clubs, councils, businesses and residents throughout Australia.”

The emphasis on one of Australia’s most recognisable icons - the surf club - is deliberate. Surf lifesavers are at the forefront of dealing with the impacts of climate change. This is a determined campaign to have all surf clubs in Australia operating on green technology.  North Steyne Surf Club, celebrating its centenary this year, recently installed rain water tanks and solar panels in its quest to become energy efficient.

According to Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches president, Gordon Lang, the national launch of Life Saving Energy is timely coinciding as it does with the centenary celebrations of volunteer surf life saving in Australia.

“Surf life saving clubs believe that the leadership shown by CEFE, itself operated by volunteers, in tackling climate change is vital,” said Mr Lang. “Our clubs are being inspired to think globally and act locally with the installation of energy efficient products.

“This campaign is also about raising community awareness and educating our members and the rest of the community about energy efficient and sustainable practices.

“Surf clubs are integral to the community. We do more than patrol the beach and this project is a good example of our work.

“Quite simply, aside from reducing our carbon footprint, there’s a business opportunity to save money. In the long run this will enable us to redirect our funds into our core business of saving lives.”

Speakers at the national launch include Manly Mayor Dr Peter Macdonald, General Manager of Manly Council Henry Wong, CEFE founder, Dr Matthew Nott, and Surf Life Saving Northern beaches president, Gordon Lang. An acknowledgement of the traditional owners of the land will be made by local artist and president of Guringai AECG, Jessica Birk.  The national launch is being emceed by local Northern Beaches identity Wendy Harmer.
